Nekonyancer[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6847e6bfa73464.17022821.jpg[/img] Bowerbirds construct elaborate and impressive nests, composed of objects of all kinds, such as flowers, feathers, shells, and even sparkling gemstones. Can you create the most beautiful nest and outshine the competition? [green][tip] This 46-step tutorial is best viewed on a computer![/green]1maintitlebar_content000
NekonyancerIn *Bower,* players will take turns taking and placing [blue]*Nest tiles*[/blue] on their side of the board, eventually finishing a *6x4 rectangle.* While doing so, they will try to connect tiles that are made of the same material and arrange objects in specific columns as instructed by the [red]*request eggs.*[/red]2egg_request_2000egg_request_1 1 egg_request_2 1 egg_request_3 1 nest_tile_1 2 nest_tile_2 2 nest_tile_3 2
NekonyancerWhen both players' 6x4 rectangles are complete, the game will end, and each player will win 1 egg for... • Each *column* in which they have more of the requested object than the other player. • Each *material type* in which they have a larger group of connected tiles than the other player. [green]Whoever scores the most eggs wins![/green]3maintitlebar_content000
NekonyancerBefore we continue with the tutorial, I suggest you *zoom out* until the main board only occupies the left half of the screen. It should look like this: [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6847e6c0eb3f04.55668594.jpg[/img] [blue]Ready? Okay, let's go![/blue]4maintitlebar_content000
NekonyancerOn each player's first turn, they must take a Nest tile from the supply. There are always three available tiles, and players may not take random tiles from the deck. *Take [red]this tile![/red] Then "Confirm" your choice at the top.*5nest_tile_1010nest_tile_1 6
Nekonyancer*Good!* The tile was instantly replaced with another tile from the deck. [blue]Now our opponent will take one![/blue]1nest_tile_467cec6331d23700
NekonyancerFrom the second turn onward, each player's turn will consist of two steps. *1.* Take a Nest tile, as we've done already. *2.* Play a Nest tile from our hand onto our side of the board. *Start by taking [red]this tile![/red]*1nest_tile_367cec64ca43bf10nest_tile_3 6
Nekonyancer[blue]Now we have to play one of the two tiles in our hand![/blue] Whenever we play a tile, at least one part of it must be *adjacent* to the main board or a previously placed tile. In other words, we can't have tiles "floating" in the middle of our play area. We can *rotate* tiles however we like.1nest_tile_167cec658799a700
NekonyancerTo decide where to place tiles, we should keep the *Request eggs* in mind. Each of the six columns has one assigned to it, indicating what kind of object we should place there. For example, [red]*this Request egg*[/red] indicates that whoever has the most yellow feathers in this column will win an egg at the end of the game.2egg_request_267cec658799a700egg_request_2 6 dummy_square_pl_4_1 1
NekonyancerWe have a tile with two yellow feathers on it. That's perfect! *1.* Select [red]*this tile.*[/red] *2.* Click on it once to *rotate* it. *3.* Place it so that it straddles the middle two columns, like this: [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6847e6c23fc7e9.39479684.jpg[/img] *4. Confirm!* [green](Step 10/46)[/green]3nest_tile_167cec658799a710nest_tile_1 6
NekonyancerGreat! Let's learn a little more about Request eggs before we continue. They feature *two different objects* - feathers and flowers - in *four colors* - red, purple, yellow, and white. White actually represents *all* colors at once. [green](2 objects) x (4 colors) = *8* Request eggs in all.[/green]1egg_request_367cf8ff3a85fd00
NekonyancerOf those 8 Request eggs, only *6* will be used in each game. We can see [red]*3 of them.*[/red] Our opponent can see [blue]*the other 3.*[/blue]2egg_request_367cf8ff3a85fd00egg_request_1 1 egg_request_2 1 egg_request_3 1 egg_request_4 2 egg_request_5 2 egg_request_6 2
NekonyancerEven though we can't see 3 of the Request eggs, we can *guess* what they are based on our opponent's actions! [blue]What does our opponent's first tile suggest about their Request Eggs?[/blue]1dummy_square_op_1_167cf9046ce44a00
NekonyancerWell, they put a purple feather here, so it's possible that this is the [blue]*purple feather Request egg.*[/blue] In addition, they put double red flowers into a column that they know *nothing* about. Isn't that strange? Maybe the red flower egg is one of the two *unused* ones. Or maybe they're playing mind games. Or maybe they're new to the game.2dummy_square_op_1_167cf9046ce44a00egg_request_4 2
NekonyancerMaybe that's enough maybes. Let's take our next turn. *Take [red]this tile![/red]*3nest_tile_767cf9046ce44a10nest_tile_7 6
NekonyancerI want to place this tile next, but where should we put it? [blue]Consider our visible Request eggs carefully![/blue]1nest_tile_767cf90bbd7d3000nest_tile_7 6
NekonyancerAgain, *white* feathers actually mean feathers of *all* colors, so i think the double red feather side of our tile should go in [red]*this column.*[/red] But what about the other side? How should we rotate the tile? [blue]Well, there are other mechanics to consider...[/blue]2egg_request_167cf90bbd7d3000egg_request_1 6
NekonyancerEach half of a tile is made of a different kind of *material.* There are three kinds: *straw, moss,* and *gravel.* [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6847e6c38688a2.91969727.jpg[/img] We should try and connect tiles of the same material together. At the end of the game, we'll score one egg for each material in which our *largest connected group* is larger than our opponent's.3nest_tile_767cf90bbd7d3000
NekonyancerWith that in mind, let's position this tile with the red feathers in the 2nd column and the purple flower in the 3rd column, like this: [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6847e6c49c17a5.18766115.jpg[/img] *Place the tile, then confirm!*4nest_tile_767cf90bbd7d3010
NekonyancerOf course, we don't actually know if our purple flowers will end up doing anything in [blue]*this column.*[/blue] But maybe we'll get lucky. :) [green](Step 20/46)[/green]1egg_request_567cf90c92f6f800egg_request_5 2
NekonyancerNext turn! *Take [red]this tile![/red]*1nest_tile_567cf90e469f2f10nest_tile_5 6
NekonyancerThere's one more reason why I had us position our second tile in that way: [blue]*gems.*[/blue] Whenever a player arranges 3 gems in a single column OR 3 gems in a single connected group of the same material, they can take a *bonus tile!*1dummy_square_pl_4_167cf911c5dc1000
NekonyancerWe have another tile with a gem on it, and it's on gravel - the same material our other two gems are on! *Position the tile like so:* [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6847e6c5e33d21.33183459.jpg[/img] *Then confirm!*2nest_tile_567cf911c5dc1010
NekonyancerWhenever a player gains a bonus tile, they actually draw *three* of them. They must choose one of them and reveal it to their opponent. Some tiles, like [blue]*this one,*[/blue] can be placed into our nest on a later turn. With [red]*others,*[/red] we'll simply apply an effect and then discard them.1bonus_tile_267cf9127659df00bonus_tile_1 2 bonus_tile_2 1 bonus_tile_3 1
NekonyancerYou can hover over each tile to see what they do. [blue]*Shells*[/blue] are a little complicated though. I'll show you how they work soon. In this case, I think two of the tiles are best used later in the game, so let's go with the shell tile. [blue]*Take the shell tile!*[/blue]2bonus_tile_167cf9127659df10bonus_tile_1 7 bonus_tile_2 13 bonus_tile_3 13
NekonyancerGreat! It went into our hand. By the way, the steps we take on our turn will not change - we'll draw a tile, then play a tile - so gaining a playable bonus tile had a side effect of permanently increasing the size of our hand.1bonus_tile_167cf918e323c800
NekonyancerWow, our opponent put two purple flowers into the 3rd column. Could this actually be the [blue]*purple flower Request egg?*[/blue] If it is, we're very lucky, considering the tiles we've placed already!1egg_request_267cf91a4bf36100egg_request_5 2
NekonyancerNext turn! *Take [red]this tile![/red]*2nest_tile_1067cf91a4bf36110nest_tile_10 6
NekonyancerLet's place our [red]*bonus tile!*[/red] I'll explain how *shells* work after we place it. *Rotate it once and place it like so:* [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6847e6c74e8633.04183918.jpg[/img] You rotated *once,* right? Not three times? Check that the orientation of the shells matches the picture. *Then confirm!*2bonus_tile_167cf91ede118f10bonus_tile_1 6
NekonyancerGreat! [blue]Small white shells function as *tiebreakers* for...[/blue] • requested objects in a column. • each player's largest group of connected tiles in each material. • eggs at the end of the game. Colored shells basically function as *infinite small white shells.* [green](Step 30/46)[/green]1dummy_square_pl_4_167cf91ff2806000
NekonyancerFor example, both players have two purple flowers in the third column. If this indeed turns out to be the [blue]*purple flower Request egg,*[/blue] we'll be *tied,* so whoever has the most *shells* in the column will win the column's egg. Our colored shells count as infinite shells, so we'll win the tie, no matter how many small ones our opponent collects.2egg_request_267cf91ff2806000egg_request_5 2
NekonyancerIn addition, if the game somehow ended now, our largest group of connected *moss* tiles will have 3 tiles in it, which will beat our opponent's largest group of 2. [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6847e6c8b218a5.15437344.jpg[/img]3dummy_square_pl_3_367cf91ff2806000
NekonyancerIf they increase the size of their largest group to *3* before the end, we'll be *tied,* but our colored shells will win the tie for us.4dummy_square_pl_3_367cf91ff2806000
NekonyancerFinally, if we both score, say, *five eggs* at the end of the game, whoever has the most *shells* in their entire nest will win. Our colored shells count as infinite, so we'd win. [blue]Pretty useful, eh?[/blue]5dummy_square_pl_3_367cf91ff2806000
NekonyancerLet's take one more turn together. I showed you earlier how we can gain a bonus tile by placing 3 gems in a connected group of the same *material.* We can also get one by placing 3 in the same *column!* *Take [red]this tile![/red]*1nest_tile_1267cf925721ca510nest_tile_12 6
NekonyancerWe definitely want the purple flower/gem in the third column. [blue]But what about the yellow flower? Should we put it in the second column or the fourth?[/blue]1nest_tile_1267cf928dbce7a00
NekonyancerWell, remember that we're supposed to end up with a *6x4* rectangle. If we place the tile like *this,* it will be impossible to do so. [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6847e6c9d576c3.88463532.jpg[/img] We'd have to *skip a turn* later on!2nest_tile_1267cf928dbce7a00
Nekonyancer*Position the tile in the 3rd and 4th columns, like so:* [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6847e6cb12eb86.85378762.jpg[/img] *Confirm!*3nest_tile_1267cf928dbce7a10
NekonyancerAnother bonus tile! Awesome! Again, you can *hover* over them to see what they do. *When you're ready, take [red]this one.[/red]*1bonus_tile_567cf929d9f92b10bonus_tile_5 6
Nekonyancer[red]Hey, we were right! Red flowers IS one of the unused eggs![/red] [green](Step 40/46)[/green]1pl92143487_hand_nest_tile_placeholder_667cf92d4a5d9f00
Nekonyancer[red]A couple quick warnings about bonuses:[/red] You can only get *one* per turn. If you place a single tile that can trigger bonuses in multiple ways, you'll still only get *one.* Adding a fourth gem to a group of three does not accomplish anything.2dummy_square_pl_3_167cf92d4a5d9f00
Nekonyancer[blue]Okay, I think you've seen enough![/blue] The game will continue until each player has taken *12* turns, finishing their *6x4* rectangle (unless they planned poorly and left holes). Then BGA will award eggs for each column and each material. Some bonus tiles will award eggs as well.3maintitlebar_content67cf92d4a5d9f00
Nekonyancer[blue]There's one final rule I haven't mentioned yet:[/blue] If you win a column with only *1* of the requested object, you win *two* eggs instead of *one.* I think the only way to reasonably accomplish this is to successfully *fool* your opponent! [green]After all the eggs are awarded, whoever has the most eggs wins![/green]4maintitlebar_content67cf92d4a5d9f00
NekonyancerOnce you have more experience with the game, you might consider toggling the *Super Nest Variant* in the lobby options. There are two significant changes in this variant: *1.* Each player takes *15* turns instead of *12,* creating a *6x5* rectangle instead of *6x4.* *2.* 7 bonus tiles are revealed at the beginning of the game. When a player triggers a bonus, they must take one of the 7.5maintitlebar_content67cf92d4a5d9f00
NekonyancerFinally, some bonus tiles can ruin your opponent's plans, and not everyone likes playing that way. If you toggle the *Fair Play* variant, these offensive bonus tiles will be removed from the game.6maintitlebar_content67cf92d4a5d9f00
Nekonyancer[blue]*Thank you for playing through this tutorial for Bower!*[/blue] If you have any questions or comments about the tutorial, feel free to send Nekonyancer a message. Big thank yous go out to... • *Pierpaolo Paoletti* for designing this game. • *Irene Laschi* for illustrating. • *Cranio Creations* for publishing. • *XiaoYi* for developing it for BGA. Have fun! :D7maintitlebar_content67cf92d4a5d9f00
