nalkaIn French Tarot, your goal is to have the most points after a given [red]number of hands[/red]. During a hand, your score will depend on tricks taken by your team. I'll come back to teams and scoring later.2total_turns

nalkaLet's look at [red]our hand[/red] at the bottom of the screen. French tarot uses a set of playing cards made of: • The standard 52 playing cards. !!! Aces are the weakest. • A new figure: [green]C (knights)[/green]. They are stronger than *V (jacks)* and weaker than *D (queens)*. • A set of [blue]trump cards[/blue] numbered from 1 to 21. The higher, the stronger. • The Fool. We'll meet it later.3myhand_item_23

nalkaBefore playing a hand, players go through a round of bidding. We're [red]first[/red]. Our hand has interesting cards but we're not confident enough to bid. Let's *pass*.4archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment

nalka[red]motokultable[/red] feels confident enough and bids [green]Guard[/green]. Since this is the highest bid, they become [blue]the taker[/blue] for this hand. There are two more things [blue]the taker[/blue] has to do before we can start playing the hand.1bid_indicator

nalkaFirst, [blue]the taker[/blue] has to [green]call a king (R)[/green] to determine their partner. The player owning it *secretly* becomes their partner. Here, [red]*R♦*[/red] has been called. Since we don't own it, we'll play against [red]motokultable[/red] and their partner but with the other two players.1called_card

nalkaSecond, [blue]the taker[/blue] uses [red]the kitty[/red]. We'll see how this works later.1kitty_item_74

nalkaAlright, we're ready to start the hand! Remember? We're [red]first[/red] so it's our turn to play. Aside from trumps, nothing beats it so let's play *R♠*. It should be an easy trick for us.1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment

nalkaThis time the [red]first card of the trick[/red] is a trump, this means players have to play a trump if possible. When playing trumps, there's another restriction: we must play trumps stronger than the trumps already in the trick if possible. This means if we had trumps lower than 11, we couldn't play them here. nalkaLet's see how that new [red]hand[/red] looks... Hey! What's [blue]that ★ card[/blue]? It's [blue]*the Fool*[/blue], a special trump card that can be played *no matter the requirements*. It *can't* win tricks but when you play it, you keep it [red]!!! unless you play it in the last trick of the hand[/red].1myhand_item_52

nalkaIt's our turn to bid. Since we were first on the previous hand, we're now last. Let's look at the other players' bids. Only [red]motokultable[/red] felt confident enough to bid and decided to go for a [red]small[/red]. We have a good hand, we want to bid too! Let's see what our options are.2myhand_item_52

nalka• *Guard* is bigger than *[red]small[/red]* but both let you use the Kitty normally (that's next). • *Guard without the Kitty* is even higher but instead of using the Kitty normally, its cards stay hidden and will count for the taker's points at the hand's end. • *Guard against the Kitty* is the highest. Cards in the Kitty stay hidden too but they *don't* count for the taker's points.3bid_3

nalkaTo win a hand, the taker's team must score at least 56 points. There are 3 [blue]bouts[/blue] : [blue]Trump 1 and 21[/blue] and [blue]the Fool[/blue]. Owning [blue]bouts[/blue] at the end of the hand lowers that threshold to 51, 41 and 36 for owning respectively 1, 2 and 3 [blue]bouts[/blue].2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment

nalkaCards you own at the end of the hand are worth points: • [blue]Bouts[/blue] are worth 4.5 points each. • [red]Figures[/red] are worth points depending on their strength. Respectively 4.5, 3.5, 2.5 and 1.5 points for each R (king), D (queen), C (knight), and V (jack). • [green]Other cards[/green] are worth 0.5 points. You can see the value of a card if you mouseover it.3archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment

nalkaThe more [blue]the taker[/blue]'s team exceeds (or misses) their target for the hand, the more points are scored (positively and negatively) by both teams. A few "bonuses" like the Poignée we saw at the beginning of the first hand may affect the score for the hand. That score will then be multiplied according to the [red]current bid[/red].4archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment

nalkaLastly, a few more things: • In 3 and 4-player games, there is no call, the taker is alone. This might also happen in 5-player games if the called R is in the Kitty or with a self-call. • When none bids, the hand is skipped but the hand counter doesn't move. With goulash variant, instead the hand is played, there are no teams and the goal is to score as little as possible.5archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment
