Jellby[green]Welcome to the Uncle Chestnut's Table Gype tutorial[/green] This is a strategic game for 2 to 4 players, with a fair bit of randomness.1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment000
JellbyThe goal is being the first player to move all their pieces from the home row (where they start) to the home row at the opposite side of board, the order doesn't matter. In this case, we have a 2-player game. Our pieces are the [green]*green ones*[/green] at the bottom, and our goal is to move them to the upper side, where the [red]*red pieces*[/red] currently are.2dice_1_symbol000dice_1 3 dice_2 3 dice_3 3 dice_4 3 dice_5 3 dice_6 3 dice_7 3 dice_8 3 dice_9 1 dice_10 1 dice_11 1 dice_12 1 dice_13 1 dice_14 1 dice_15 1 dice_16 1
JellbyOur opponent is trying to move their [red]*red pieces*[/red] to the bottom row, where our [green]*green pieces*[/green] currently are. The winner is the player who does it first.3dice_16000dice_1 3 dice_2 3 dice_3 3 dice_4 3 dice_5 3 dice_6 3 dice_7 3 dice_8 3 dice_9 1 dice_10 1 dice_11 1 dice_12 1 dice_13 1 dice_14 1 dice_15 1 dice_16 1
JellbyThe [blue]home rows[/blue] at the left and right sides are only used for 3- or 4-player games. We can ignore them in 2-player games.4cell_0_4000cell_0_1 2 cell_0_2 2 cell_0_3 2 cell_0_4 2 cell_0_5 2 cell_0_6 2 cell_0_7 2 cell_0_8 2 cell_9_1 2 cell_9_2 2 cell_9_3 2 cell_9_4 2 cell_9_5 2 cell_9_6 2 cell_9_7 2 cell_9_8 2
JellbyAs in chess, the different pieces have different allowed moves, and we will move them turn by turn. Unlike chess and other similar games, *there are no captures*, and pieces can only move to empty squares. There are, however, random rolls, which we will see later.5dice_1_symbol000
JellbyThe basic movements of the different pieces are as follows: The *swords* can move one square diagonally, to the grey squares in the diagram. [tip] The crossed swords should remind you of the diagonal movement. [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6847e712bfea24.08976490.jpg[/img]6dice_1_symbol000dice_1 3 dice_2 3
JellbyThe *tree* can move one square forward (straight or diagonally), or straight backward. Here, "forward" means towards the target home row, so for our pieces it would be to the grey squares in the diagram, for our opponent it would look upside down. [tip] The branches spreading at the top and a single trunk at the bottom should remind you the movement. [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6847e713dfc1f4.57713649.jpg[/img]7dice_3_symbol000dice_3 3 dice_4 3
JellbyThe *book* can move one square orthogonally, that is straight forward, backward, left, or right, to the grey squares in the diagram. [tip] The book looks kind of square, so no diagonals allowed. [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6847e714ea9621.28732138.jpg[/img]8dice_5_symbol000dice_5 3 dice_6 3
JellbyThe *flame* can move one square diagonally or orthogonally, in any direction, to the grey squares in the diagram. [tip] Think that fire spreads everywhere. [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6847e715e43cd3.38299794.jpg[/img]9dice_7_symbol000dice_7 3 dice_8 3
JellbyThere are two other pieces that will appear later. The *ear* cannot move at all. [tip] Can you move your ears? (Actually I can, but you get the point.) [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6847e7170c46c0.40497039.jpg[/img]10cell_0_9000
JellbyThe *hat* can move like a knight in chess: in an L shape with one square in one direction and two squares in 90 degrees, to the grey squares in the diagram, and it can jump over other pieces. You can choose which path to use for each target square. [tip] Think maybe in a hat blown randomly by the wind? [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6847e7180ffe92.08573190.jpg[/img]11cell_9_9000
JellbyBefore explaining the jumps and the random rolls, let's get started. There are some slight variations in the game. In this one we are allowed to rearrange our pieces in the home row before the start. To exchange two pieces just drag one of them and drop it onto the other. We'll start by dragging [red]this *tree*[/red] onto the [red]left *flame*[/red].12dice_4_symbol010dice_4_symbol 9 dice_4 1 dice_7 1
JellbyI'll do the rest of the exchanges for you, just click "Continue".1dice_76290b992120b800
JellbyOnce done with the rearrangement, click on the "I'm finished" button.1action_finished6290b9af4d11610
JellbyNow we can start to move. Select [red]this *book*[/red], and we'll move it forward.1dice_6_symbol6290b9c2848fe10dice_6 1
JellbyThe only possible move is to the square above. That should not be a surprise if you remember that a *book* can only move orthogonally, and the squares on its sides are occupied. So click on the [red]square above[/red] to move [red]the *book*[/red]. !!! If this message is covering the square, you can minimize it with the [-] button on its top right corner.1dice_66290b9c64fbe310cell_6_8 1 dice_6 1
JellbyNow let's move [red]this other *book*[/red]. Click on it to select it.1dice_5_symbol6290ba0acabfb10dice_5 1
JellbyActually, I lied before, there was another possible move: to *roll* the piece. I'll break the news now: the pieces are actually the six different sides of identical dice (so each die can represent any of the six pieces). If you are not happy with one of your pieces, you can roll it instead of moving it and hope to get something better. You could get the same piece, or something worse, though.1action_roll6290ba1006b5600
JellbyWe won't roll this *book* though, we'll move it. But here comes another important piece of information. The pieces that move one square (all except *ear* and *hat*) can also *jump* over another piece in the same direction. So this *book* cannot move one square right, because it's occupied, but it can jump over one piece onto the next square on the right.2dice_5_symbol6290ba1006b5600cell_6_9 1 dice_5 1
JellbyAlso, whenever a piece is jumped over, no matter which color it is, it's *rolled* "for free", which may be good or bad... Let's jump over the *swords* and roll it. Click on the empty square between the *swords* and the *tree*3dice_5_symbol6290ba1006b5610cell_6_9 1 dice_5 1
JellbyWell, the roll resulted in no change. But it's not over, as in checkers, when we jump over a piece, we are allowed to take another jump, and another, and another... as long as we obey the movement rules of the piece. !!! We could even jump back to the previous square, but that wouldn't reroll the *swords*. Each piece is rolled at most once during a turn.1dice_5_symbol6290ba116a31b00cell_6_7 1 dice_5 1
JellbyLet's just jump ahead. Click on the square above the other *book* to jump over it and roll it.2dice_56290ba116a31b10cell_6_7 1 dice_5 1
JellbyToo bad we got an *ear*. We could spend some other turn to roll it, or we could just jump over it for the same result. Let's skip some turns now. !!! One thing to notice, though. Once a piece leaves the initial home row, it is not allowed to re-enter it. That's why we didn't get the chance of jumping again over the *ear* to the bottom row. It would have served no purpose anyway.1dice_6_symbol6290ba1311b4b00dice_6 3
Jellby[tip] Now we will try to hinder the opponent by changing their *flame* into something else (hopefully an *ear*). We can just jump diagonally over the *flame* and return to our current position to continue.1dice_4_symbol6290bbcdcb03c00
JellbyWe placed our first piece in the target row (and our score, on the right, is now 1). !!! Another thing to remember: Once a piece finishes the turn in the target row, it cannot be moved again.1dice_8_symbol6290bca1d28b300
JellbyThe *hat* is a bit special. As we saw initially, in its basic movement it can already jump over other pieces. In fact, the *hat* can only move once in a turn and cannot chain several jumps as the other pieces. Let's move [red]this *hat*[/red] to the square below the green *tree*.1dice_7_symbol6290bd134742010cell_7_2 1 dice_7 1
JellbyNow we get a choice on which path to use for the move/jump. First 1 right and then 2 up, or first 2 up and then 1 right... Which do you think will cause a roll of the red *flame*? Choose wisely using the buttons at the top.2dice_7_symbol6290bd16c672a10cell_7_2 1 dice_7 1
JellbyGood. Once happy with the selected move, click on "I'm finished".1dice_7_symbol6290bd1810d9610cell_7_2 1 dice_7 1
JellbyWell, I believe that's all you need to know to start playing Uncle Chestnut's Table Gype. Enjoy and good luck!1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment6290bd33a897200
