JellbyHello, welcome to the Blaze tutorial. Blaze is a card game for 3 to 5 players, based on the classic Russian game Durak. The objective of the game is to *get rid of your cards* as fast as possible. The earlier you can do it, the more points you earn. You can also earn points by guessing which player will be last (or by getting other players guess you... wrongly).1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment000
JellbyThe game is played in two rounds, with the second round giving more points than the first. These (top left) are the prize or *feather* cards for the first round. The first player to get rid of their cards will get the top card (*2* points), the second player will get the next card (*1* point), and the third player will get nothing. There are as many feather cards as the number of players minus one.2trophyCardsPlace000trophyCardsStock 3
JellbyEach of the two rounds has two phases. The first phase lasts for as long as there are cards remaining in the deck, and in this first phase players will always draw new cards if they finish their turn with fewer than 5 cards in hand.3deck000deck 3
JellbyWhen the deck runs out of cards, the second phase will start, where players will no longer draw new cards, and they will get the feather cards as they empty their hands. But before starting this second phase, we will secretly guess who will be the last player to get rid of their cards with these (bottom left) betting cards. We will see how this works later.4playerBettingCardsPlace000playerBettingCardsStock 3
JellbyNote that each player starts with 5 playing cards in their hand and 3 betting cards. The backs of the betting cards have different colors, because we need to know to whom each card belongs. Otherwise the betting cards are identical for all players: *0*, *1*, *1*. (I will call the other two players just "chrys" and "nix", for short.)5otherPlayer-87143340000
JellbyThe playing cards (we can see our hand at the bottom) come in three colors or suits: red, yellow and blue. Each color has numbers *1* through *9* (although in three-player games the *1*s are removed) as well as a special *firebird* card. There are two copies of each card.7playerCardsPlace000playerCardsStock 3
JellbyThe game is played over a series of attacks or challenges. There is always one player who's the *attacker*, marked with a reddish border in the interface (nix), and one player who's the *defender*, marked with a bluish border (us). In addition, the player sitting to the left of the defender (chrys) acts as a *supporter* for the attacker. So it's 2 against 1! But the roles will rotate.8otherPlayer-90987800000
JellbyAn attack starts with the attacker playing one or more cards with the same number. In this case they chose to attack with a single (blue) *5*.1attackCardStock_item_44612bcdafe4ec100attackCardStock_item_44 1
JellbyIt is our turn to defend, since we are the defender. How can we do that? We just need to play and pair, for each attacking card, one that is the same color, and the same or higher number. So, a blue *5*, *6*, *7*, *8* or *9*.2attackCardStock_item_44612bcdafe4ec100attackCardStock_item_44 1
JellbyBut note this face-up card under the deck. This indicates the *trump* color for this round. As in other games, trump cards have more value than other colors, so we could actually use for our defense *5*-*9* blue, *or any yellow card*. Note also that this face-up card is in fact the bottom card of the deck (it's included in the "x19" count), so we know that whoever draws the last card will get it.3trump612bcdafe4ec100trump 1
JellbyIndeed, since we have no blue card at all, we will have to defend (unless we pass) with a yellow (trump) card. [tip] Normally, one would think that it's better to play the *4* here, we will see in a moment why playing the *5* is probably a better move.4playerCardsStock_item_48612bcdafe4ec100playerCardsStock_item_38 1 playerCardsStock_item_48 1
JellbyTo defend with the yellow *5*, click on it first to select it, then click on the blue *5*, and then click on the "Defense" button at the top.5playerCardsStock_item_38612bcdafe4ec110defenseButton 19 attackCardStock_item_44 18 playerCardsStock_item_38 17
JellbyGood. The attack is blocked for now. But after this first strike, the attacker and the supporter have the opportunity to add more cards to the attack. They can add more cards, with some restrictions...1defenseCardStock612bcdb78c80300
Jellby1. They can only play cards of a number already present on the table (the 4 yellow card shown as a trump doesn't count). This is why it was better to play a *5* than a *4*, it reduces the attack options for the other players.2table612bcdb78c80300attackCardStock 3
Jellby2. All the cards played together must be the same number. 3. The total number of attack cards cannot exceed neither five nor the number of cards in the defender's hand at the beginning of the attack. (So, during the first phase it cannot exceed five, and during the second phase it may have to be lower.)3table612bcdb78c80300attackCardStock 3
JellbyIn this case, the attacker declined to add more cards, but the supporter added a new *5*, which we will have to defend against.1attackCardStock_item_17612bcdc1d8af100attackCardStock_item_17 1
JellbyWe can block this red *5* with a red *6* or *7* (or with the trump *4*). Ideally, we would block it with another red *5*, but we don't have it, so the *6* will have to do. Pair the red *6* with the red *5* as earlier: select the *6*, then the *5*, then "Defense".2playerCardsStock_item_11612bcdc1d8af110playerCardsStock_item_11 1
JellbyIt's again the turn of the attacker and supporter. They can add more cards to the attack. Now they can add *5*s or *6*s, because we put a *6* on the table.1attackCardStock612bcdd5e608d00attackCardStock 3
JellbyThey declined to add more cards (or maybe they had none to add). Since all the attacking cards were blocked, the attack was successfully defended, and all the attacking and defending cards are discarded. These will not be used again.1discardCardOnTable612bcddd2649000discard 1
JellbyAlso, since we're still in the first phase (there are still cards in the draw deck), all players replenish their hands to five cards if they had fewer than five. We got a blue *3* and *4*, not very powerful.2playerCardsStock_item_46612bcddd2649000playerCardsStock_item_46 1 playerCardsStock_item_50 1
JellbyThe turn now proceeds clockwise. The previous defender becomes the attacker, the supporter becomes the defender, and the player to the left of the defender becomes the supporter (since there are only three players here, this is the previous attacker, but it won't be with higher player counts).3otherPlayer-38923250612bcddd2649000
JellbyIt is our turn to attack. We can attack with a *3*, with a *7*, or with one, two or three *4*s. [tip] Since the goal is to get rid of cards, using the three *4*s could look better, but in this phase we are going to get new cards anyway, so maybe it's better to use our lower (and single) cards first. Let's attack with the *3*. Select it and then click the "Attack" button at the top.4playerCardsStock_item_46612bcddd2649010attackButton 18 playerCardsStock_item_46 17
JellbyThe defender blocked with the other copy of blue *3*. It is now our turn to add more cards to the attack, but there are only *3*s on the table, and we have none. So we'll have to pass. Maybe the supporter will add some more *3*s? Click on the "Pass" button at the top.1defenseCardStock_item_30612bcdeea458310
JellbyNo new cards were added to the attack, so it was successfully defended, the cards were discarded and we drew a new card. The roles are again changed and we will be the supporter now.1discardCardOnTable612bcdf4c708f00
JellbyThe first attack with a *3* was defended with an *8*, and that opened the door for a further attack with two more *8*s. As we are now the supporter, we can add more cards too, but sadly we have no *3* or *8*, so we'll have to pass. Click on the "Pass" button.1table612bce0f2024810
Jellby!!! Again? What happened? Well, the defender couldn't (or didn't want to) block the new attacking cards, so the defense is now unsuccessful. After an unsuccessful defense, the attacker and supporter have the chance to add more cards again. The attacker didn't do it, and neither will we, so pass one more time.1passButton612bce185590010
JellbySomething different happens after an unsuccessful defense. First, the cards used are not discarded, but the defender keeps them. Note that they now have 8 cards in hand, instead of 5. And second, normally it would be the turn of the previous defender to be the attacker, but since the defense failed, their turn is skipped, and it's the next player's turn to be the attacker.1otherPlayerCards-90987800612bce1ad21f600
JellbySo it's our turn to be the attacker. !!! With three players it looks like the turn is going backwards, but remember it's just the previous defender's turn being skipped. We could attack with one *7* or up to four *4*s. Let's test the waters with just one *4*, we can always add more later.2playerCardsStock_item_50612bce1ad21f610playerCardsStock_item_50 1
JellbyThe defender blocked the first *4* and opened the door for attacking with *6*s too... but we have no *6*. We have more *4*s, though. Let's attack with the red *4*s and save the trump. Select the two red *4*s and click on the "Attack" button.1playerCardsStock_item_6612bce2738f0b10playerCardsStock_item_6 1 playerCardsStock_item_25 1
JellbyAha! The defender used two *9*s to block our *4*s (and the supporter played nothing). [tip] We could add the trump *4* to the attack (or any *6* or *9*, but we have none), but if we let the defense succeed, we make sure these cards (especially the two *9*s, which could be dangerous if used as an attack) are discarded. So just pass and hope the supporter passes too.1defenseCardStock612bce36df4df10
JellbyI hope you got the drill: 1. Attacker starts the attack. 2. Defender blocks each card. 3. Attacker may add more attack cards. 4. Supporter may add more attack cards. 5. Back to #2. If a defense is successful and both attacker and supporter pass, the cards are discarded. If the defender passes, attacker and supporter may add more cards, the defender keeps all cards and their turn is skipped.1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment612bce3e4a37e00
Jellby!!! By the way, all this back and forth, with attacker and supporter repeatedly getting the chance of adding more cards to an attack makes turn-based mode not very adequate for this game. In my opinion, at least.2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment612bce3e4a37e00
JellbyWe are nearing the end of the first phase, as there are only four cards left in the deck (and remember the last one is yellow *4*). [tip] We may want to try to get that yellow card, at least it's a trump.1deck612bce57adad700deck 3
JellbyThere are now *7*s and *8*s on the table, and we have both to play as supporter. !!! Unfortunately, we can only play a single number. Play the *7*.2playerCardsStock_item_26612bce57adad710playerCardsStock_item_26 1
JellbyThe defender blocked it with a trump, and the attacker passed, so we can now attack with the *8*.1playerCardsStock_item_19612bce67d2cb010playerCardsStock_item_19 1
Jellby!!! Now the attacker added a *2*. This makes a total of five attack cards, which is the maximum, so we cannot add more cards, even if we wanted to. Note, if it wasn't clear before, that an attack with a trump can only be defended by another trump of equal or higher value.1attackCardsOnTable612bce795b6db00attackCardStock 3
JellbyOops, we didn't get the trump (it's shown greyed out as a reminder). There's good news, however, because there were not enough cards in the deck for everyone and we can start the second phase with only 3 cards in hand.1trump612bce7e451ac00trump 3 playerCardsStock 3
JellbyWhen drawing cards, first the attacker draws as many as needed, then the defender, and finally the supporter. Chrys drew 3 cards, nix drew the last card left (the yellow *4*), and we drew nothing.2trump612bce7e451ac00playerCardsStock 3
JellbyNow, before the second phase starts, it's time to use the betting cards and guess who will be the last player remaining with cards in hand (the loser of this round). For this, we select one of the three betting cards and give it, face down, to the guessed player. If that player is indeed the last, we get the card back as points. But if they're not the last, they'll keep it as points!3playerBettingCardsPlace612bce7e451ac00
JellbyWe cannot bet for ourselves, even if we thought we would be last, but we can use the *0* card to make sure we give no points away (the *0* card is always returned to the owner, so it can be used again). !!! Note that only the cards actually used for betting will count as points, so keeping the *1*s unused doesn't mean we will get two extra points at the end.4playerBettingCardsPlace612bce7e451ac00
JellbyLet's play it safe now, and bet *0* points on chrys. !!! Normally you'd click on the *0* and then on chrys's playing area on the left, but the tutorial interface is somewhat buggy, so just click on "Continue".5playerBettingCardsStock_item_60612bce7e451ac00playerBettingCardsStock_item_60 1
JellbyThe second phase (of the first round) has now started. But just notice that here on the right we have our betting card, we can see that nix also betted on chrys, while chrys betted on us (probably with their *0* card, since they couldn't bet on themselves, if I had to guess).1overallBettingCardStock-87143340_item_60612bce9cbc06500overallBettingCardStock-38923250_item_63 1 overallBettingCardStock-87143340_item_57 1 overallBettingCardStock-87143340_item_60 1
Jellby[tip] We defended with red *5*, so we are left with trumps only, that should be enough to defend against any red or blue.1playerCardsStock_item_18612bcea41779300
JellbyThat was easy, now all that's left is attacking with our last card, and no matter whether or not the defense succeeds, we'll be out of cards and we'll collect the first feather card, worth *2* points. Just attack with the yellow *4*.1playerCardsStock_item_48612bceba8604410playerCardsStock_item_48 1
JellbyAnd here on the right we can see our prize. Now the other two players will compete for the other *1*-point feather card. !!! With only two players, there's no supporter, only attacker and defender, and if a defense fails, the turn goes back to the attacker (as usual, the defender's turn to attack is skipped).1overallTrophyCardStock-38923250_item_65612bced9efb3000overallTrophyCardStock-38923250_item_65 1
JellbyChrys was the second to get rid of their cards and got the *1*-point card, and nix got nothing. The betting cards are then revealed. Since we used the *0* card, we just get it back. Chrys did actually bet *1* point on us, and failed, so we keep their purple card as *1* point. Nix had betted *1* on chrys and also failed, so chrys keeps the beige *1* card.1overallTrophyCardStock-87143340_item_64612bcee92f65700overallBettedCardStock-38923250_item_63 1 overallBettedCardStock-87143340_item_57 1 overallTrophyCardStock-87143340_item_64 1
JellbyThat was the end of the first round, and we begin the second and final round. The mechanics is exactly the same as in the first round, but the feather cards have now higher value, starting from *2* instead of *1*.2trophyCardsPlace612bcee92f65700trophyCardsStock 3
JellbyA new trump card is revealed, so now the trump color is red instead of yellow.3trump612bcee92f65700trump 1
JellbyIf you were attentive, you may have noticed that the total number of cards does not add up. Indeed, roughly half of the cards are used in the first round, and the other half are used in the second round. (For the details on how this is done, see the manual.)4deck612bcee92f65700deck 3
JellbyYou may also remember that I mentioned firebird cards at the beginning, and we haven't seen any. It looks like they were all in the second half of the deck, so we can expect to see them in this second round. Let's wait until they appear...5deck612bcee92f65700deck 3
Jellby... and here they are. As with other normal numbered cards, there are two of each color. They are considered to have a value of *0* when defending and *10* when attacking. In other words, they can only be defended with a trump (or with nothing at all if they are of the trump color), and they cannot defend against anything (except the trump firebird, which can defend against the other colors).1attackCardStock_item_12612bcf33f192900attackCardStock_item_12 1 playerCardsStock_item_13 1
JellbyThat's more or less all you need to know to play the game. But since it won't take too long, let's see how this one ends, and I'll comment on a couple of things on the way. Try to follow what's going on as you watch.2attackCardStock_item_12612bcf33f192900
JellbyLet me stop here just to tell you that, when you have to defend against several cards, you should pair them one by one. So, in this case, click on the yellow *7*, then on the right yellow *5*, then on the red *4*, left yellow *5*, and "Defense".1playerCardsStock_item_25612bcf72256b610defenseButton 16 attackCardStock_item_38 20 attackCardStock_item_40 18 playerCardsStock_item_25 19 playerCardsStock_item_15 17
JellbyIt's time to bet again. Now we have betted *1* point on chrys, since they have 10 cards in hand. We have 7, which is quite a few, but they're only of three different "numbers", and three of them are *9*s, so there's a good chance we can quickly get rid of them.1overallBettingCardStock-87143340_item_59612bd062013f500overallBettingCardStock-38923250_item_62 1 overallBettingCardStock-87143340_item_55 1 overallBettingCardStock-87143340_item_59 1
JellbySadly, nix had only trumps and could defend the all-firebird attack. They got the *3*-point feather card.1overallTrophyCardStock-90987800_item_67612bd080aee1600overallTrophyCardStock-90987800_item_67 1
JellbyNow at least, if we are second, we'll get the *2*-point card and the *1* point we betted on chrys. I think it can be done. Start by attacking with the trump firebird, which cannot be blocked by anything.2playerCardsStock_item_34612bd080aee1610playerCardsStock_item_34 1
JellbyNow we can attack with the three *9*s.1playerCardsStock_item_49612bd0a38795510playerCardsStock_item_49 1 playerCardsStock_item_36 1 playerCardsStock_item_54 1
JellbyAnd finish it off with the last two cards.1playerCardsStock_item_45612bd0b288a0f10playerCardsStock_item_45 1 playerCardsStock_item_28 1
JellbyAnd that did it! We got not only the second *2*-point feather card and our bet on chrys (the orange *1* card), but also the *1*-point bet chrys placed on us, since we didn't finish last. In total we got 7 points, and won the game. Congratulations!1overallTrophyCardStock-38923250_item_66612bd0b8b516900overallBettedCardStock-38923250_item_59 1 overallBettedCardStock-38923250_item_63 1 overallTrophyCardStock-38923250_item_66 1
