Hi, I can't seem to recreate this issue. I've tried 2p, 3p and 4p without and issue and as far as I know you are the only one who got that bug.
Next time if you are not able to put a protester, can you try to refresh your browser (F5)? It might just be a connectivity issue because it seems like the server isn't handling the call correctly.

My opponent had this problem in game 21612439. He said in chat that he got the same error message when clicking on a tree (after deciding to protest), and F5 didn't help.
