In firefox the board and pieces were not shown, only light-green circles where I could place a new pawn. This way it is impossible to play the game. Any new pawn placed was also not shown. imgur.com/liNj0Ov

F5 did not solve the problem. I pasted the link of the table in edge, and there I could finish the game.

I downloaded Firefox 88.0.1 (64-bit). It played Gopher without issue. I can only suggest updating your Firefox version. There's nothing I can do to make the Gopher program compatible with outdated Firefox versions.
