I agree with using PNG over JPEG for the best image quality. However, this might come at the cost of a much higher file size.
If BGA supports it, it would be best to convert the original source files (if available) to SVGs. This would provide the clearest graphics and smallest file sizes at all resolutions, especially since the artwork on these cards lends itself well to vector line art.
