1. If the token were placed to the side of the card and not on any of the 3 normal spots it would be much clearer that we are in a dead zone. The card would still be on the table and a reminder card in hand. And the comm token can immediately turn red just be placed into a new spot that needs created for dead zone purposes.
2. It can even mysteriously vanish until that card is played and return as a red token then. No one would be opposed to the mysteriously vanishing comm token in a dead zone since that is the point that they are not used anyway.
Whatever fix is easiest to implement would be much appreciated! Thanks!

Yes please use something more obvious than colour. For one thing, people who are colour blind would not be able to tell a difference
To the side would be fine, or in anywhere other than the middle, where people assume it means "only card"

Additionally, I would recommend using the "Dead Space" icon (pg. 17 of rulebook) in the log description. I've played enough that I don't necessarily read the text; and we didn't realize that we were in a dead zone until after we had played a card. Having the icon on the mission text screen (maybe near Distress Signal) would be great!

Also, the flavor text suggests that the deadzone might be an occurence in the future, it was not quite clear to me that the dead zone affected the entire mission.

in one hand, that is true, but in the other, the story tells "restricted communication"
but a different colour or position (or broken token) would be more understandable

We just ran into this in mission 6. Having some kind of visual indication of there being special rules for a dead zone would be really helpful.

There are other missions too that described it as "communication is interrupted" or "communication is down" which means dead zone, but it's not super clear. I know this is how the rules were written, but the rule book also has a symbol (red question mark next to the communication token) that clarifies it. I think the little symbols that the rule book uses on the side of the text should also be used in this game so we can quickly glance on the symbols to see what the "rules" are for the particular mission without having to read the flavor text.
