I think it would be better to show # of technology cards instead of # of gears.

Just adding a note here trying to help us all achieve clarity. Reference for this rulebook page 9, lower right corner. Perhaps the OP is misunderstanding, but it seems clear to me that "total industry value" does in fact mean the total number of "gears" on the tech cards.

Gear count is important to determine majority in technologies at end of game. Tech card count may also be important if the Tech achievement card is out. So we will show both using format t#/g#.
