The game would not allow me to build a cross track over a link where two trains denoted a previous company merger.

Probably not since the game wouldn't allow. Tried at move 585. See screenshot.

Building a new track on a hex with existing track that connected to a ferry hex was denied.
Now it works just fine.
You will be offered a chance to build into the ferry hex, but it won't react to the ask unless you have activated the 'Spirit of Tasmania' card

Completing a link on a hex that displays a Company Merger (two or more engines showing), caused the completed
link to also be shown as a Company Merger.
