The decision to trash cards or not against the mummie should have been made by the player being hit at beginning of their turn ... not the previous player at the end of their turn (and the game misleads the previous player by warning them that THEY will take damage ... when it is actually the following character that will take damage)

The issue is not about damage display.
It is about the wrong player who is playing the enemies' phase with the almighty mummy:
Usually the enemies' phase is played by the player who is getting attacked, which makes sense because it's part of their turn. For the almighty mummy, this phase - which includes trashing cards from melds to block damage (special effect of the monster) and spending tokens just before taking damage - is played by the player who just ended their own turn instead. The decision of which cards to trash should be made by the player that is about to get attacked and take their turn.
