The players thought they could move their knight to spots not connected by roads to the original spot of the displaced knight!
Thus it is a rule misunderstanding. You can only move knights along your own roads, thus you stay always in the same road network if you have 2 separate road networks. Example: You have a settlement and some roads in the east and a settlement and some roads in the west. If you place a knight in the east it will always stay on the eastern road network after displacement. Only if you connect your road network you can move your knight freely.
Additionally, you also cannot move your knight over settlements/cities/knights of a different color. But this is irrelevant here.
