out of curiosity, did you accidentally trash a Distillery Upgrade?

i would not use RED. it is too intense and will draw the eye. I would instead mute the buttons for the slots that are occupied, and If the user chooses to replace, have a notification appear, asking if "you want to replace an upgrade with the one you've purchased".

Because the slot number is of no other relevance, how about this procedure?:

If there are already occupied slots: Display white button for each occupied slot with something like "Replace ${Distillery Upgrade occupying slot}"

If there is at least one empty slot: Display blue button with "Place ${New Distillery Upgrade} on empty slot"

Do the assignment of empty slot automatically and show used slot number only in log. (Similar to moving spirits for aging into warehouse)

I do like the idea of this vroomfondel, however i think i have to present the *option* to discard an existing distillery upgrade, since it is possible to do mechanically.

My suggestion had it both:
- The usual placement in empty slot (use normal blue buttons for that)
- The option to replace an existing distillery upgrade (use white or other "dimmed" colored button for each)
The click on latter could be followed by confirmation question "Are you sure to discard ${old distillery upgrade}?"

Just lost a game because I clicked too fast and put a new distillery upgrade on top of the old one, even though it was the only distillery upgrade I had and there were two empty slots. If nothing else, a confirmation dialog if you're about to discard your existing upgrade when you have spaces open would be greatly appreciated.

A friend I have played two game with complained both times that he mistakenly replaced an improvement. I don't know how he does this when there is at least the keyword (open) on the slots that don't contain anything. But maybe if a user attempts to replace an item it should just throw a warning that they are about to replace X. If it there's an open slot it could offer them the choice to replace the item in that slot (i.e. overwrite it) or move that item (or the new item) to an empty slot instead (so they don't have to cancel and then go back and make another choice).

I have added a confirmation dialog if you are discarding a card. I hope that this provides what you need. I am going to reject the idea of auto-placement even though i understand where it comes from.
