Why would you not get 3 cards? The first ability gives you 1, the second ability gives you 2... For a total of 3... It's not an either/or...

Its not a bug, like jjdb210 said. When you play an owl, you'll automatically get a card.
If you play the green owl, like here, by paying with two green cards, you'll get two bonus cards plus the first one.
If you play the green owl, like here, by paying with two green cards, you'll get two bonus cards plus the first one.
